No more tanning for my face

I was hoping I'd never have to write a post like this. Today, I had a dermatologist appointment. saw a new doctor, but it was not my first time ever going to one.

I went this time because I've gotten 2 broken blood vessels on my face in the last 2 years. They basically look like veins that are RED and kinda like a zit (minus the head) that just never go away. :(

So I asked the doc, I think I have broken blood vessels on my face, how do I get rid of them?

He says "Are you in the sun?"

I glance at the floor giving my response, "well yeah...." as my voice trails off.

Dirty look from the doctor which I really interpreted as you stupid stupid girl. Why are you here when you know what caused this!?!

Derm tells me that my spf 15 Oil of Olay face moisturizer isnt "enough" to protect me. That I need to wear AT LEAST 30 if not higher on my face.  Excuse my language but FML. GAAAAAAAAH

SERIOUSLY?

booo. Hiss.

these are all the sunscreens they gave me. he says neutrogena is the best when it comes to SPF and women's faces and what not.

So about that Broken Blood Vessel...........

Doc says, "Oh you can have it removed. It will cost you 90.00 bucks with or without insurance."

The bad part, it will get "worse" before it gets better meaning It will hurt, and have a scab for a week. ARGH.  So I decided not to have it done right that second, before talking it over with Mister Wonderful.

here are a few pics of me. NO MAKE UP NOTHING. I did my best to try and point out the sun spots and what not.

You have to click on the pictures to make them bigger to even see anything, but they are there none of the less.

So here's my other problem.....

Tanning and the tanning bed. ......HUGE vice of mine. I figure there are 2 kinds of people in this world. The kind that are young and stupid, and the kind they are old enough to know better yet do it anyway regardless of the consequences.

I'm option #2. It's like Smoking. All you smokers out there that KNOW it's bad for you. Yellow teeth, bad breath, cancer...etc yet they still do it anyway day in and day out.

Tanning same thing. Now I don't do it all but once a week, but tanning has always had it's perks for me. for one, a clear clean face. 2, a light tan all year.

Now what am I gonna do? I guess for now, I just won't tan my face anymore. I'm going to have to figure out some serious make up tricks to make my face appear "tan". I have used bare minerals before. But I was using that even with my tanned face!

To many people, summer means hanging out at the pool or the beach, soaking up rays and baking in the sun in pursuit of the perfect golden tan. Indeed, most Americans, including up to 80% of people under age 25, think they look better with a tan. I know because I was one of them (I'm 28 now)

But before you don your bathing suit and head to the pool — or into a tanning booth — spend a few minutes finding out about your skin and sun exposure. These facts can help you get the look you want without stressing your skin.

UVA rays may make you tan, but they can also cause serious damage. That's because UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin than UVB rays. UVA rays can go all the way through the skin's protective epidermis to the dermis, where blood vessels and nerves are found. (HELLO What did i JUST SAY fellow readers!?!? I went in because of broken blood vessels on my face!!!!!! And again, I'm ONLY 28!!!! )
Because of this, UVA rays may damage a person's immune system, making it harder to fight off diseases and leading to illnesses likemelanoma, the most serious (and deadly) type of skin cancer.
I'm not a complete moron. I DO wear sunscreen. I guess I just haven't been wearing it "high" enough on the part of your body that counts the most !! IE your face!!!!! I do want to live a long healthy life. I just have to  "man up" so to speak and start paying attention my face a whole lot better.

  1. Have you tried spray tanning or self tanners you can do at home? If you get a good one it looks really natural and it's definitely much better for your skin. :)

I used to be the same way with tanning, I loved it! I worked at a tanning salon for a while so it was so hard NOT to go a few times a week. I'm also a huge sun worshipper in the summer. I live for days out at the pool soaking up the rays for hours on end...

I don't really know what made me change my sun-bathing ways, but now I'm much more careful about my skin. I always wear sunscreen and I never use tanning beds anymore. That's not to say I don't go out in the sun - I could never do that! haha. I just pay more attention now.

So it's definitely a good thing you went to the dermatologist for your skin - better to be safe than sorry!

  2. I saw your tweets earlier, sorry the doc dished out this bad news. I'm the same way. I'm addicted to the sun in the summer and spend every spare moment outside, using only 15 on my face. :(

  3. I used to be "tanorexic"
My college town opened a new tanning bed and we got gradnfathered in at $20/month, unlimited tanning. I went ALL the time. My mom is Italian, so I tan really easily. After about a year of non-stop tanning, one of my moms friends from work was diagnosed with brain cancer and given 6 months to live. Shortly after the initial diagnosis, she was told that she had a spot of melanoma on the back of her arm (she tanned religiously, like I was doing) and since she hadnt caught it, it had traveled to other places in her body, including her brain. Tanning killed her. It was a really rude awakening that got me to cancel my membership right then and there. I think it takes someone you know getting really sick from skin cancer before you really realize that it CAN happen to you :/

  5. Ahhhh I know exactly what you mean girl. I used to work for a tanning salon for two years...My face is very aged for a 25 year old lol. I stopped tanning after my wedding and I hate that my white fat doesn't look as good as my tan fat :) I've been using the Oil of Olay too but I feel like the SPF makes me break out more. I wish tanning wasn't so bad for you...not fair! :( Oh, and have you tried the Jergens lotion? I love it!

  8. I kind of have that young and stupid attitude towards tanning too. I like to have a tan... darn it! I use that same face moisturizer, but I know I should be using like 70 SPF yikes. I have tried a spray tan but it was pretty orange until it faded to a good color. Not the best alternative, but it is sunless.
