Life Lessons from Atticus Finch

“If you shouldn’t be defendin’ him, then why are you doin’ it?”
“For a number of reasons,” said Atticus. “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem to do something again.”
“You mean if you didn’t defend that man, Jem and me wouldn’t have to mind you any more?”
“That’s about right.”
“Why?”

“Because I could never ask you to mind me again. Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one’s mine.”

I love thi

I love this movie/book. Like most kids, I had to read this book in the 8th grade and for some reason, it stuck with me and turned into one of my favorite books as an adult.

I know I've mentioned it on here before about potential girl names I would name my future some day daughter, but I do love the name Scout. Not for a girl like in the book, totally as a boys name!

  3. I did not enjoy this book the first time I read it, but I loved it the second time. I could only dream to be a person and parent like Atticus Finch. He is definitely a model human being.

  4. I love this movie! Especially near the end, when the trial is over, and everyone in the balcony stands up as a sign of respect, and the woman says to the kids, "Stand up. Your father's passing." So good!

As a side note, my mom is convinced that one of the great travesties in her life was not managing to convince my dad to name one of his 3 daughters Scout. He thought it was toi weird. But I love the name too!

  8. @ Taryn --- I Tried to email u back a response but your email isn't set up!! Girl you gotta fix that! For a girl name, I do think it's a bit different, I've always loved it as a boys name. Long ago on the WB (which is now the CW network) there was a show (on the same year Dawsons Creek aired) called Young Americans starring Kate Bosworth she played Bella and the male lead was a guy's character that went by Scout. That's how I was hooked on the name! google the show if you've never heard of it! It was so good!

  9. I love this book. It's part of what inspired me to go to law school.

About the names - isn't Demi Moore's daughter Scout named after this character?

  10. So I totally slacked off in highschool and didn't take AP english senior year when they read to kill a mockingbird...so I've never read it! Crazy right?! I HAVE heard the names Atticus and Scout before so I am guessing they came from the book? I think Scout is bad ass! I wonder if Demi Moore and Bruce Willis named their daughter Scout from the book? Is it weird I know the name of their daughter?

  11. I love the name Scout for a little girl {remember, we've talked allllot about little girl names} What about the name Peyton for a girl? I am a fan of taking "guy-ish" names and using them as girl names like "Kyle, Reece {Witherspoon}, Taylor, and Ryan :)" I think they sound better for girls. YOU'RE. GETTING. MARRRRIED.
