Jaws

Anyone ever see a movie that scared the piss outta them as a child?

 For me THIS was it.
All it took was the classic DUH Nuh.  DUH NUH. DUH NUH DUH NUH ..................

This movie probably had the biggest psychological effect on people than any other in history... To this day people are still scared to go into the water because of it. I should know. I'm one of them!

I know that as a child I was PETRIFIED of swimming even in a POOL with a deep end. To make matters worse, I saw this at an age where I had to learn how to swim. Bad mommy and daddy for letting me watch this.

The pool that my mom took us to learn to swim at, had a SHARK logo painted on the deep end of the pool's wall. Not friendly shark  face-- oh no, one with teeth and a mean look on his face.

Needless to say I did NOT pass swim class that year.

Think that's bad?

A few years later when I was 13, we went to Disney World in Florida, right after my mom passed away.

My brother who was only 9 at the time went on the Jaws ride with my dad, I stood outside and waited for them. I was terrified. ITS JUST A RIDE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, right?

No mechanical shark was gonna get me. Oh No.  I wouldn't even stand under the classic jaws display.
Not my picture, just a googled picture but you get the idea.

These pictures are from yahoo's little article about Jaws this morning. Even flipping through the slide show, I had a hard time stomaching the images.

So needless to say, I DONT like SHARKS. AT ALL! Scare me to death.

Ironically, I do own JAWS on DVD. Is that weird? haha

  1. I was never a fan of Jaws either - everytime we went to RI for the summer, my uncle would whip out the movies and make the kiddies scream. No thanks Sharkies...

  2. While not a movie, when I was 5 I saw the Thriller music video. We were at my grandparent's and the channel was on music videos and the adults were out of the room. Needless to say, my ride home I was staying as far from the window as possible. No zombie was going to come and get me!

  3. This post cracked me up! I had a friend who feels the same way about that movie and going in the ocean! For me, the scary childhood movie was IT (Stephen King)....ugh, I still hate clowns! Candyman also freaked me out a lot! I don't know how or why I was allowed to watch these as a child!

  6. I dislike being in deep ocean waters -- not because of Jaws though. I have still never seen the movie. I see too many big sharks while out fishing...I have plenty of imagination on me own, thank you very much ahaha =)

  7. we vacationed in Maine a few times when I was growing up. My cousin jen came with us one summer and she was always terrified of sea creatures - especially Jaws. Right before we started the roadtrip, we told her that Jaws was supposed to have taken place in Maine. She wasn't thrilled. It is a freaky movie for sure.

  11. oh trust me, I am the queen of freak-out when it comes to sharks. I am even scared of bridges that go over oceans- not because I am worried about them crumbling or anything, but that the car will crash over the side resulting in me being in very deep water where sharks could be. I am not even joking. It's a problem.

  12. haha! Oh girl, I should send you the blog post from St. Lucia where I SAW a shark and started freaking the eff out in the water and flailing around like a big seal.. lol! And then I wouldn't get back in the water for two days. And I also may have fallen into some fire coral trying to escape. My booty was red for a day! LOL! It was all quite terrifyingly hilarious. I am so with you. Sharks scare the HECK out of me, but yet they also totally fascinate me. I really wanna go down in a cage..er...maybe. In my head I do, but in real life, I dunno. lol!

  13. I completely agree with you!!! When I was little I wouldn't even swim in the shadowed parts of my pool because my brother would start making the jaws music. I hate going into water deeper than where I can reach, all because of this movie.. I mean I will spin around looking for fins if I am out in deeper water.. even if I am in a lake with no outlet!!

  16. I live in Florida so sharks have always scared me!

I baby sit for a little boy and when he was about 2 years old and he was bathing one day and had a little shark toy in the bath and he would go "Duh nuh, duh nuh, duh nuh..." as the shark swam around! So cute! We used to play the song from movie and that is how he decided that is the sound a shark makes!

  17. that 'duh nuh... duh nuh' has got to be the most famously scary movie tune of all time.
