Wedding Fear

The only fear I worry.dread.fear. on my wedding day, is being disappointed with my hair.
I am a FREAK about my hair. No joke.

My fear you ask?

My fear is that on my "big day", that I will be unhappy with my hair do. So often hair stylists like to give me the "prom" look. Y'all know what I mean by that right?

This look

Case in point I was in my friend's wedding in 2009 and paid 90 dollars for what I thought was going to be a fancy UP DO that I couldn't do myself right?

WRONG

I was furious. Unfortunately I let my big head er hair get the best of me, and I shed a few tears for all the wrong reasons on my best friends wedding. Selfish? Probably. I was just mad I paid so much money for hair do that I curl all the time without the assistance of a stylist!

So what constitutes as a non prom up do look?

*these 2 pictures are of a girl I went to HS with borrowed them off FB :)

this picture is the ONLY pic on pinterest and such that I have REALLY liked for an updo

These pictures depict hair styles I know for a fact that I cannot do myself.

I'm more than likely going to have my hair all the way up. It will be extremely windy along the beach, and what's the point in a hair style styled down, when the curls will get all knotted and such?

I don't know! I keep changing my mind!

Another factor I have to deal with is going to salon in Hawaii that obviously I've never been to, so I'm hoping that won't be a disaster. We are in fact flying into Hawaii 2 days early, so that is 2 days I can of trial hair!

All I know is, NO PROM HAIR!

  1. I'm a freak about my hair too. When I had to switch hairstylists I may have had mini panic about it.
I LOVE the pics at the end of the post--really pretty! Hopefully you find something that works for you and you get exactly what you want!

  2. do a hair trial with who ever you want to use and take pictures with you of what you want. THEN take pictures after the hair is styled and keep them for when you go back. I love your inspiration/non-prom styles =)

  3. I love those up-dos and I'm sure if you take those photos to the hair salon you'll get it :) And it was definitely a fear I had as well and unfortunately it did come true for me BUT I had my hair down and it looked exactly like what I normally do at home. Slightly disappointing. But the three bridesmaids who got up-dos all got exactly what they wanted :) And like you, I was a bridesmaid who paid way too much for a hairstyle that I hated :S I ended up redoing it myself lol.

  4. I know what you mean about prom hair! Just make sure you do a run through or 2 with your stylist before you guys can nail down your desired look. I love the ones you picked out, by the way!

  5. Prom hair is my biggest fear too!!! I keep telling my stylist "wavy NOT curly!" I am going for a trial in June - I know exactly how you feel! I love the middle picture you posted...that would look beautiful on you with those orchids you ordered (where did you get those by the way??)

  6. just make sure you do at least 1 trial run through and take pictures so you can see what it looks like...i know it'll look great!

  7. I got married on the beach as well, and my advice to you is to go all up, for sure. There is always a bit of a breeze, even if it's not windy, and you want even the candid shots to be good - not with your hair crazy or in your face. Nor do you want to have to readjust before every photo is snapped. Mine was in a low, soft chignon, but with a GOOD hairspray, didn't move all day...with both my ceremony AND reception all outside on the water.

  8. Your friends wedding up do's are amazing! So elegant! I was unhappy with my wedding day hair, it turned out nothing like what I envisioned. And I went to a fancy salon to get my hair and makeup done.

  9. i HATED my hair at my wedding. I spend 2 hours at the salon with a simple picture, and she made it look like i had a basketball of curls. after redoing it twice, and a gallon of hairspray, my best friend pulled me out of there because i started crying. She ended up trying to fix it back home, but it was a lost cause. I hate looking at my wedding pictures now. I TRUELY suggest you go with a natural way that you do your hair. Everyone I talk to always says they wish they looked more like themselves. Since you're getting married in Hawaii, maybe just a slight wave?? Its so pretty the way you do it (from your pictures) They cant mess that up, right??

  10. This is definitely my biggest fear as well. I have the same issue with salons doing my hair as "prom" hair as well. I have alot of hair, and no matter how many times I ask for a low up do they always give me the high, prom girl updo and I look like I'm about 15 years old.

I did a trial at my salon and I was satisfied, but not completely happy. While my hair didn't look completely "prom" girl, it was still too high for me and gave it a little prom look.

I am still rethinking my hair as well right now. I definitely want it up because its going to be hot and my hair is too long that it will just droop, but I am still looking for a style that I like that they won't do as prom hair!

I love the loose updo in those pictures!

  12. I think you have the right idea, bring LOTS of pictures of exactly what you want!! And if you do have some time in those couple of days to do a trial, don't be afraid to tell them what you like or don't. At my trial, I took tons of pictures of the finished product and then got them
Developed for the wedding day. Not sure if you'll have time to do that but at least the photos will be on your phone to refresh their memories!!

  13. I totally understand that fear. When I had my bridal portraits done, we did a test run on my hair and I loved it. But then when I took the picture back so she could see it, she parted it on the opposite side which had everything off (my hair only wants to part of a particular side). So I was extremely upset with my hair but in the end my friends pinned a few pieces differently and it made it all better once I had my dress on. With the hairstyles of your friend's on FB, those should be easy to perfect and I think they are beautiful. Good choices. Just beware of bringing in a picture and the hairstylist trying to copy it exactly.

  14. I can't agree with you more! They ALWAYS make your hair look like a prom do. I blogged about a similar issue a month ago for a friends wedding. I literally came back from the salon and washed my hair and took of my makeup. I hated both and loved the way I did it SO much better! I highly recommend a trial since you are heading out early. But don't worry, I'm sure everything will be perfect! :)

  16. I'm totally with you!! Any time I got an up do, I always went back home to "fix" certain things I didn't like. I felt bad speaking up. Not on my wedding day though! About a year before we got married, my hair was chopped off. Accidentally. It ended up chin length when it was really suppose to be over the shoulders (and my hair grows super slow). I thought I wanted a half up style for my wedding day but after the trial, wasn't a fan of how it looked. Good thing because the last weekend of September, when we got married, was in the mid-80s! And I'm a sweat-er. That hair would not have lastest! So my hairdresser and I came up with something different on a whim and thank god it turned out good!!

  17. ahhh hair is so hard! I went to a guy that had done updos for me about 6 times so I trusted him. My hair does not look great down and I knew I wanted it up and out of my face!

  18. You have every right to feel this way! Besides your dress, your hair is the next biggest thing! Practice different hairstyles with your bridesmaids before you leave for Hawaii and if all else fails, you know you and your girls can pull something together!

  19. i had to do THREE hair trials to finally decide what i wanted to do with my hair!! it is definitely a huge decision. you are gorgeous though and will look beautiful however you end up doing it :)

  20. I love the choices you've picked. And I know it'll look like perfect wedding hair.

  22. I was getting ready to say, just have a run through first and then read your last tid-bit about the salon. I think you'll be okay if you just stress what you DON'T want when you're there. The style from Pinterest is gorgeous! I wish I could do something like that - my hair is too fine!

  23. I love all those updos!! But I know what you mean about not being able to decide.

  24. oh no no no no no no. Girl this is EXACTLY what happened to me. I went to a hairdresser and asked her "soft loose curls, be achy-like" and they gave me that EXACT picture up top of this post. It was ATROCIOUS. I HATED it, so I tried to fix it myself and it was too late to wash and start over so to this day, I cringe every time I look at my wedding pics cause I HATED MY HAIR! I swear, if I get married again (ha) I'm going my hair myself, how I do every day.

    Hope this helped. haha!!

  25. Haha.. My hair totally looked like number one for the prom that I went to sophomore year.

I would get a trial run (I didn't, but I would recommend it). My hair stylist couldn't do my hair the day of the wedding, so I had to call another place. I showed the girl at the place I had it done what I wanted. She kept complaining my hair was "stiff." I told her that I hadn't washed it in like two days and I had extensions. She was wanting to wash my hair! which is a huge no-no, when doing an updo or whatever. The owner came over, and finally listened when I told her that I had extensions and she ended up doing it.

I guess my point in that story is don't be afraid to speak up or have a bridezilla moment lol. I'm also a HUGE hair person.

  26. I LOVE the second hairstyle! It looks so gorgeous but so simple too!

I know exactly what you mean about the stupid ringlets. I swear, there hasn't been a single hairdresser that has made the perfect loose waves for me. Everyone has always done those Shirley Temple curls on me! Hate hate hate

  27. I totally get it. And I would definitely do the trial hair in those two days, too! I paid for a wedding updo once that was a freaking ponytail. I was like "Wait, what?" Ugh. And my hair doesnt hold curl well...at all. So if some stylist tries to just curl it and not listen to me, it falls flat SUPER fast. Anyway, I totally get where you're coming from. You're going to look stunning, friend. you could have hair matted and rained on and you would look like a true vision on your wedding day. I am confident of that. :)

  28. I absolutely know what you mean about the prom hair fear. I worried about the same thing for my wedding this past January.

  30. Rawr I wrote a comment and it didn't go through. But if it did and this is a double..sorry. BUT you should just know, no matter what the circumstances you will be the most beautiful girl in the world on your wedding day. Simply stunning and I wish I could be there to see it. I know that your hair will be rocking and everything will go perfectly. And in the end, you'll be married...and that is really what is the most beautiful part.

  31. This is one reason I am happy we eloped. I just wore my hair they way Will likes it ;) I'm not gonna lie- I wouldn't trust someone to do my hair for my wedding day without having them try it first! Have you researched any of the stylists near your wedding site? That may help a bit. Or just invite someone you know that does hair!
