What's on your Walls?

I am going to open a can of worms here and just ask y'all---

What is on your walls in terms of "decor"?

The hubs and I have had one disagreement when it comes to our new house---

PICTURES on the wall.

First of all, I LOVE pictures. I honestly feel they are what makes a home a home.

The hubs feels like we have "too many" and it feels like a "shrine" of "us".
I told him what do you see when you walk into other people's houses? 9 out of 10 times you see photographs!

And Art.

He wants more art and less photos.

UGH.

As an art teacher, I'll be the first to veto knock off reprints of famous paintings. It ain't me.
Not for the decor of my home. I don't care how much I love Monet's waterlilies or Van Gogh's starry night. I don't want it hanging in my family room as our wall art.

So I ask you, what do you have hanging on your walls? Does anyone else have this "Problem" with their significant other?

I will knock myself down here a bit and say my area of concentration in Art was Photography. So I may go a wee bit much with photos. But in all fairness just about every friends house I've ever been in, in every room has framed photos of the people that inhabit that house!

Here's my proof via pinterest:

  1. I'm more of a photography type of girl. Luckily, I don't think the husband really has an opinion. We only have two pieces of "art" and they are paintings that my family members have done. It will probably stay that way, because I'm like you... I'm not a fan of too much "art" in the house! Good luck trying to convince the hubby!

  2. A good compromise! I have 6 huge portraits in my dinning room, one huge one in my living room, and fill in with art.

  3. I'm personally all for pictures of family on the walls! There is nothing better in my opinion! I mean some art here and there sure but I would rather family pictures of places I have been and things I have done with friends and family over some famous piece of art anytime!

  4. I agree with you! Photos photos photos! I want to do more black and white prints (maybe an entire wall?) It's just hard to pick which photos and find good walls since we're still doing the apartment thing. Slowly I'm sneaking up a ton though!

  5. Pictures (and a few other things) :) I'll elaborate.... in our family room, above our fireplace, I have a big canvas of our family, on the opposite wall I have 4 shelves that host layers of family pictures. A wall going into our kitchen has a sunburst (ish) mirror. The dining room has a mirror with plates curving up and around it, Sitting room: a large (probably 4'x6' canvas from Ikea). I have a wire candle holder (holds 8 small candles) at the end of one hall, and a huge blown up picture of the side of a bubble we took at our local science museum. And I will say, I love taking pictures and swap out the photographs on my shelves frequently :) Home is about surrounding yourself with the things that make you smile and things you love ~ go with your heart ~ if you do art and you don't love it, don't buy it.

  6. I just posted about this today :)
My husband was away on a business trip so I added some much needed flare to a few rooms in our house. I'm all for pictures!

  8. Thankfully my fiance doesn't care one way or another. Our house is mostly picture frames with just a piece of art here or there. We have concrete walls, though, so changing any decor or trying to add new stuff is pretty difficult! We try to stick with what works & that means picture frames where we can change out the photos to update!

  9. we have a lot of photos hanging in our house... and we did the photo wall. we also tried though to incorporate lots of members of our family and various pics with friends, so it didn't seem like so much of a shrine to us.

we also have some other art hung, interspersed throughout the house. we pretty much limited photos to the living room, bedroom and foyer. that way its not overkill.

  10. My husband and I have had the exact same argument when we first moved in together. I slowly added framed pics of us when he wasn't home, but now he makes me take one down as I add another. Meanie!! I love enlarged black and white pictures from happy times that are cropped artfully. To this day, 3 years into our living arrangement, we only have a large mirror on the wall in the living room.

In the bathroom, I have framed photos of a trip to Amsterdam, and in the bedroom I have some small original art pieces that his sister made. The office (his domain) is covered in maps and photos hes taken from around the world, and my 'inspiration' wall (physical pinterest essentially) just so I can claim SOME part of the room ;)

I feel the same way about reproduced prints. Also, he veto'd "girl-words" (Love, happy, believe, etc..) from being anywhere in the house.... I kinda agree with. Good luck with your decorating!!

  11. We have the same problem at our house...I want pictures! I love pictures I don't think there is any thing better to have hung up!

He wants art. We both agree nothing mass produced. The compromise I've found is instead of having a million pictures of us, is to have pictures of the places we've visited.

Obviously there are still lots of pictures of us but we have lots of large prints of the mountains, the beach, the football stadium. :) They are pictures we have taken!

  12. I am the same way, the more photos the better! But my hubs is the same as yours, he doesn't want our walls to be too crowded or too covered! I try to do a mix of gallery walls with photos and empty frames to mix it up a bit.

  14. We had the exact same issue when we just moved into our new place! Honestly we still haven't filled the walls. I know exactly what you mean. Too many pictures of you seems like shrine, I totally get that. I think the best thing is a good mix. Maybe some more candid pics too, not just sitting there smiling like hey here we are. I love the ideas you have found. Can't wait to see what you decide. :)

  15. oh, gosh, i mean, that's what happens when you get married!!! it does kind of become a "shrine" in your home to you! and it can kind of feel a bit self-obsessed at times, so i definitely see what your hubs is saying! as for my house, i love black and white photography, so we have a lot of that throughout. we have a few french prints (you know the big eiffel tower from ikea? that's in our living room!) and a few city scenes, but we also have our fair share of pictures of, well, US. ha! but our wedding photographer did such a beautiful job, i can't NOT display them! and it adds a personal touch that otherwise just wouldn't be there, you know? i think it's all about balance, between beautiful art that really shows who you are and personal photos of you and the ones you love. :)

  17. hahahah yeah in our first house I had a million wedding pictures framed and I was like wow, its a shrine! I've since changed some out and kept about 1/3 of our wedding pics up. When we have kids it will be easier to frame other pics!

  18. At least you have things on your walls. We have a few things, but I agree I think pictures of those who live in the house should be hung on the walls. My husband and I have almost been married a year and we have one photo of our wedding hanging up. I constantly ask him to help me hang more. We are considering moving within the next year so that's his issue. Walls are made to be patched later!! I'm on your side though. I prefer real life people pictures in homes rather than art.

  19. i love having a ton of photos of our lives all over. maybe you can mix it more with scenes from travels and events of yours? or maybe compromise that you get one wall all devoted to the two of you?

  20. I like photos. Another thing that is cool is like old black and white maps. My boyfriend is from Ohio so he has big framed maps of the Ohio river in his home. I am with you on the reprints of art though. Perhaps compromise and have a large amount of photos in one area. I have built in shelves dedicated to photos in my family room but none really anywhere else.

  21. For the walls, I like art and photography of places I've been; I actually have a gallery wall with pictures from our trip to New York, the California coast, Australia, New Zealand, London, Park City, Charleston, and many other places. On bookcases and the piano, we have pictures, 5x7 or smaller, of family and our closest friends. I totally "get" a large family portrait in a family room or something, but I think it's weird when I walk into a house and people have pictures of themselves all over the place. I don't mind family pictures (with children) quite so much, but several pictures of just couples is very odd to me.
